The pine forests and granite peaks of the Black Hills of South Dakota are rich with Old West history, and despite the breathtaking natural beauty it's impossible to ignore the legacy of greed when you visit. These hills used to be rich with gold and freely roamed by a large community of America's native people. Now Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore stand at odds, representing two very different versions of our shared American history. One side is told by the federal government, the other is remembered by the Lakota Nation.
These photos are from a camping trip to Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park. Though small (and man-made) this lake was truly an oasis in the vast grasslands of Wyoming and southwestern South Dakota.

We drove to Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial but didn't feel like paying entrance fees of $11 and $20, respectively. These are sculptures of mammoth proportions, and you don't exactly have to be up close and personal to see them and appreciate their scale. I don't have a picture of Crazy Horse, which is in the early stages of its construction, but to give you an idea of the scale and proportion: Mount Rushmore is 60 feet tall; the Crazy Horse Memorial will be 560 feet tall.

I haven't yet mentioned on the blog that I'm officially living in Boulder now. In the past four weeks I've moved into a new apartment in a seriously convenient location and transitioned into working a new job. It's been busy and exciting! I've put a lot of energy into filling the apartment with furniture, decking the walls with maps and artwork, and familiarizing myself with the neighborhood. I've also become part of a new team, sharing the vision of two endearingly quirky women and their stylish minions as we work together on a new boutique project.

In the hustle and confusion of the move, the excitement of a new job, and the joy of living with my love, I lost weeks on end to non-stop action. Until last weekend, that is, when Marc and I roadtripped to South Dakota, of all places.

We had four days not otherwise spoken for by work, climbing trips, and other obligations, and those four days were staring us down, demanding that we pick a new and interesting area to explore. Lots of ideas were thrown around, but in the end too many of them required a flight or would take us south into triple digit heat. The Black Hills and the Badlands beckoned.

For two and a half days we car camped in Custer State Park in the Black Hills (post to come). On the third night, we drove further west to a small town called Wall. I'll say that although the Wall Drug Store draws lots of tourists, the main attraction of staying in Wall was its proximity to Badlands National Park.

The first (and only) thing we did in the park was the Badlands Loop, which takes you on an hour-long drive with plenty of stops for panoramic views, fossil replicas under glass, and poorly marked mini hiking trails. Peering out over the jagged and jutting formations in oppressive heat with the earth crumbling beneath our feet if we got too close to the edge - that was an experience that helped us to understand the term "Badlands," which comes from Native American and French names for the area, which translated describe the land as being bad to cross. Makes sense, doesn't it?
Yes, this is a post about rock climbing.

BUT. If you're looking for a post with words in it like flake, jugs, cams, cruxes, sport climb, dynamic moves, or any type of rating scale reference, this is not the place. I'm a total novice on the rock who is fortunate to go out with some excellent climbers and learn. And slice up my hands. And sweat it out on tiny foot holds with forearms so pumped I think they'll have to be amputated if they can ever pry me off the wall.

Of the seldom glamorous but always exhilarating life experiences I've had in Colorado, this one's up there. I didn't even reach the anchor (the top of the route) but I learned some valuable lessons and didn't give up at the most challenging moment of my ascent. That's a win for me.

SO. On Tuesday, Marc and I went out to Clear Creek Canyon with friends Rudy and Hunter (below) to climb.

We left early that morning, drove into the mountains, parked on the side of the highway, and hiked up to the routes. The direct sunlight was already brutally hot when we arrived at the site. The view was incredible.

After taking turns on some fun, mild routes - for four hours - the pros wanted to try something a little edgier. While Hunter is a rookie like me, Marc and Rudy have been climbing together for years. They headed over to Officer Friendly (rated 5.11B) to master the overhanging climb. Marc took a fall. He calls this photo "dancing with the rock."

Undeterred, he got up a second time. Rudy had already placed gear on the route that Marc had to 'clean' (remove) and he finally nailed it. Straight to the top. That's my baby. After that he was chillin' pretty hard. I was still having a minor heart attack.

One major perk of having a Monday-Tuesday "weekend" is the uncrowded hiking trails and climbing routes. These spots really fill up on the weekends, and who really wants to wait in line to experience nature?

Nobody?

Exactly.

In the past few weeks I have rarely stayed in the mountains on my days off. Whether I'm in Atlanta for a wedding, Denver for a conference, or Boulder to search for an apartment and a job something always seems to be drawing me down from my high elevation. I decided that a staycation to explore the areas around Vail was in order.

Colorado in the summertime is a pick-your-own-adventure outdoor-lovers' paradise. The internet is rife with articles ranking the best hikes, climbs, bike trails, and campsites. Habitually making the list of primo rocky mountain hikes is Hanging Lake: a 2.4 mile roundtrip hike to a gorgeous travertine lake atop a cliff.

And so, for my most recent Monday-Tuesday "weekend" I found myself headed for the Hanging Lake Trailhead near Glenwood Springs with my sunblock, my sneakers, and my boyfriend.

The trail gets steep and rocky but levels out frequently. There is plenty of shade and a cool breeze coming from Dead Horse Creek, which runs downhill alongside the path. The trail is relatively short but challenging. In terms of difficulty I'd say it was similar to the Delicate Arch Trail in Moab, but easier because it of the lush scenery, shaded trail, and motivation to get to the top.

The boardwalk surrounding the lake can be completed in 10 minutes or less. Contact with the water is not allowed to preserve the delicate ecosystem that the lake contains. After scrambling onto some rocks for a better view and posing for some photos, we continued uphill to Spouting Rock.

Spouting Rock is only one minute further along the trail past Hanging Lake, and it's totally worth it to get misted by this icy cold waterfall.

All said and done, we completed the hike in around two hours.

Before doing this I had no idea that Colorado could offer such lush scenery. Passing through the arid red sandstone desert that is often associated with this state on the way to the trail, it was really surprising to find this gorgeous turquoise blue lake resting so high in the cliffs of Glenwood Canyon.

I'd highly recommend it if you're staying in Vail and have half a day to make the hour(ish) drive to Glenwood.Dylan Crossleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18074346884525270029noreply@blogger.com1Hanging Lake, White River National Forest, Colorado 81601, USA39.6016497 -107.191996714.079615200000003 -148.5005907 65.1236842 -65.8834027tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8299718085885100340.post-90394644755107898252013-06-16T11:37:00.000-06:002013-06-17T19:28:11.862-06:00Happy Daddy Day

This week is Father's Day AND my father's birthday.

So let's celebrate dad!

If I wanted to give you a quick picture of my father, I'd say: My dad is an attorney who works hard and plays hard. He's very charismatic and bumptious. He's intelligent and loves sports - the Philadelphia teams. And he's raising seven kids. I say seven because even though I'm the oldest, he's still teaching and guiding me! Here's a quote or two he might find funny, should he decide to check in with Dylan Crossley:

"A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty."

Or the short and sweet: "A father carries pictures where his money used to be."

No, I don't think I'm ready for that. Besides, I'm lacking the prerequisite live-in boyfriend who is a professional photographer and/or fancy camera. But I did want to share this: my new minty snake print top by Joie has a) a fun keyhole in the back b) adorable cap sleeves c) a nice drape and d) tulip hemline - all of which I really like right now. Working at Perch I pick up quite a few fun items, meet designers, and learn about interesting brands. Speaking of, I'm really looking forward to carrying Parisian label IRO.
Tomorrow is Marc's birthday, which got me thinking about some of our adventures. Our first stop in the southeast immediately popped into my mind...

Well, my road trip posts have been out of order but I'm finally getting around to posting about one of the first stops Marc and I made on the route from Philadelphia to Boulder. Here's a quick recap of our 12 Hours in Nashville, which really were a testament to how quickly and easily one can plan a trip on-the-go using the internet.

Using my iPhone, we were able to locate a hotel within our budget, decide on a restaurant for lunch, and learn the history of certain areas of downtown Nashville as we walked.

We arrived in Nashville around midday and checked into a hotel on Broadway. After lunch at Fido we drove downtown to enjoy the perfect Saturday afternoon. Nashville was full of life. We passed lots of musical street acts and heard live music bursting from every bar. We stopped in the park and shopped for cowboy boots (but didn't commit to any) before choosing a place to settle down. From our third-level balcony spot at the Whiskey Bent Saloon we could see a bike-and-beer tour taking off and a parade of wild costumes occasioned by a novelty 4K.
We ended the day at Zanies Comedy Club where Rob Schneider was performing. Rob is shorter in person than you'd expect - hence this funny anecdote that he opened with:

Rob was recognized by a group of older black women on the street one day. One of the ladies accosted him saying: "Hey, where do I know you from?" Rob replied that he was Rob Schneider, the actor, and she probably recognized him from one of his movies. She laughed and replied: "Uh-uh. Rob Schneider ain't no midget, baby."

The end of my first season in Colorado is finally here. After an exciting bonus weekend at Vail Mountain, winter is officially over (now if the weather would only cooperate!). Marc and I drove through Loveland Pass on our way to Boulder from Vail the other day. Do you agree that it's just gorgeous? Yet the beauty of the Rocky Mountains is a cold and unforgiving one...

What was on my mind as we rode along the spine of the Continental Divide, at an elevation of nearly 12,000 feet, with no guard rails? This is a land of breathtaking panoramas, yes, but also of hairpin turns, steep grades, and avalanche territory.

On Saturday, five snowboarders* were killed in an avalanche while skiing the Loveland backcountry. The avalanche was massive: 600 feet wide and 1200 feet long, advancing at 50-60mph. According to the ABC News Blog, "The five deceased snowboarders, all in their 30s, were trapped under about eight feet of snow in what is being called Colorado’s deadliest avalanche in 50 years." The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reports 19 deaths this season. My heart goes out to the lost ones and their families. Once again it is made apparent, as it so frequently is in Colorado, that if you want the greatest thrills, you have to take the greatest risks, and ultimately be prepared to make the greatest sacrifice.

*Later reports identified four snowboarders and one skier.Dylan Crossleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18074346884525270029noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8299718085885100340.post-67233740394542685242013-04-18T14:05:00.000-06:002013-04-18T21:16:50.513-06:00Clare Vivier

Clare Vivier foldover clutches, tote bags, card holders - they're so soft and beautiful! If 'sports luxe' is a big thing right now, which it is, then these are ideal summer accessories. But let's be honest - they'll last forever and only become more beautiful with age so I recommend a choice that will make you happy for years to come. When I first saw her designs this morning, I thought to myself: "All-American." Yet Clare spends a considerable amount of time in France avec son mari francais (a woman after my own heart).

Last weekend it was in the seventies in Boulder. I was so excited to escape the chill, the wind, and the wet April snow in Vail during a visit this week. And then WHAM! a blizzard hits and suddenly Boulder County is blanketed in a foot of snow and even colder than my little Rocky Mountain town. So much for that sweet escape to the warmth.

So I'm sitting here, relaxing after work, alternating mouthfuls of velvety red wine and morsels of baking chocolate (why do I have no ice cream in the house?). I want to open my laptop and find something that will refresh and re-energize my brain, like hitting the reset button after working two jobs.

Enter Alexandra Spencer of 4th and Bleeker. Her blog posts are unselfconscious and tightly edited, her style one of lavish minimalism. Buy less but by the best: and if you can only afford the YSL pants, go topless. When a new post appears on my blog feed it feels like a rare treat. Do yourself a favor and check it out. In fact, thanks to the unique brand of fashion bloggers who act as ambassadors for the entire Australian fashion scene (in my eyes), chief among them miss Spencer and the inimitable Margaret Zhang, Australia has jumped in recent months from a bucket list to-do to an immediate desire.Dylan Crossleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18074346884525270029noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8299718085885100340.post-53673629919871631432013-04-01T10:59:00.002-06:002013-04-01T11:05:18.333-06:00Cocotay Vintage

Coco re-imagines vintage pieces and designs her own imitation vintage, or reproductions. Her line is carried by Bergdorf Goodman and Harvey Nichols, and in the past two days I have seen firsthand why she experiences such success, creating new friends and Cocotay devotees wherever she goes. She is openly sweet and genuine, leaving me with the happy feeling that she is like her jewelry line - broadly appealing, girly, fun, and above all: unique. Coco is exactly the kind of woman I'd like to take out for a cocktail (if she weren't pregnant, that is. Congrats, Coco!). In what I'm coming to know as a characteristic display of enthusiasm and generosity, Coco brought this Sex and the City 2 book to the boutique, where two of her vintage cuff bracelets adorn the arm of Carrie Bradshaw herself as she sips a drink in the desert beyond Abu Dhabi (page 99).

At Perch we have three kinds of events: casual champagne, premeditated appetizers, and full-on cupcakes.

It doesn't require much prodding to break out a bottle of bubbly. Casual champagne can really be a "just because" sort of event. As in, it's Friday night and my favorite song just came on, let's have champagne! "Can't Hold Us" by Mackelmore will do. And of course we love to share. A crudité or a cheese and cracker platter requires some planning. Birthday celebrations, charity fundraisers.. these kinds of events get nibbles and champagne. So, you may well ask, what kind of event deserves both of these... and cupcakes?! Ladies and gentlemen (am I flattering myself to think I have any male readers?), meet Lindsay Bloom.
Trunk shows are special events where we welcome designers to our little boutique in Vail. The invitation to attend is open to everyone in town. The men and women who wander into Perch, on purpose or by happy chance, are encouraged to ask questions about materials and inspiration, create custom jewelry one-on-one with the designer, and shop the full spring line. Lindsay is always gracious about answering questions and in person she's a real sweetheart. Find Jewelry by Bloom here. [My favorite pieces are the signature black ties, leather bracelets, and hoop earrings.]

French movies often seem bizarre to an American like myself - gritty, thought-provoking, often introducing latent homosexuality, a strong bicuriosity or at least a healthy threesome. I've seen classics (Belle de Jour, Le Mépris, A Bout de Souffle) and classroom movies (Entre les Murs, L'Auberge Espagnol, Jean de Fleurette). The movies below are my favorites among them all. They are in no particular order.

Le Hérisson
Based on the novel The Elegance of the Hedgehog

La Haine
The French equivalent of Boyz n the Hood

Les Petits Mouchoirs

La Vie En Rose
The life of Edith Piaf

Coco Avant Chanel
The early life of Coco Chanel

Rust and Bone

Séraphine
As satisfying as a trip to a museum

Paris
Especially the dancing scenes

Les Choristes

They feature some of my favorite actors - not just Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu, and Brigitte Bardot, but also Audrey Tautou, Vincent Cassel, Mélanie Laurent, Romain Duris, and the best of all (in my opinion): Marion Cotillard. It's springtime in Vail, and with time off this week for spring break and Easter families have travelled from all over the country and the world to this little resort town - including my aunt, uncle, and fabulous cousins. Grace and Cooper live in Florida most of the time and I don't see them as often as I'd like, but I was thrilled to have them in Colorado this week! I love you Grace Face and Coop!

DON'T bring a big city attitude to a small town. The locals won't thank you for it.

DO ask for recommendations/talk to locals. I was speaking to a couple the other day who told me that they couldn't get reservations at a certain restaurant in town until they asked their concierge to make the reservation for them. The concierge got on the phone and voila! You've just gotta find somebody that knows somebody, and you're in.

DON'T bring work with you. You're on vacation!

DO get plenty of exercise before coming, especially if you want to ski or snowboard.

DON'T forget to look at the stars at night.

DO rent a car if you plan to stay for more than a few days.

DON'T underestimate the cost of your trip.

DO participate in apres-ski. It's the shit and we love it.

DON'T ask for a "locals discount." It's for locals.

DO come in the summer.

DON'T litter. Vail is located in a national park. It's astoundingly beautiful (and we want to keep it that way).

DO sample fireball and rumplemintz. But be careful.

And the biggest DO of all: Have fun!Dylan Crossleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18074346884525270029noreply@blogger.com0
